Gatongora is a growing area near Ruiru, just off Thika Road in Kiambu County. If you are looking at houses to rent in Gatongora, you will mostly find newer apartment blocks, plus some older plots and bungalows. This guide covers what daily life is like and what to check before you move.
Gatongora at a glance
- Where: Near Ruiru, close to Thika Road (the Thika Superhighway).
- Housing: Mostly new apartments - bedsitters, one- and two-bedroom units - with some older plots.
- Feel: Fast-growing, with construction still going on in parts.
- Rent: ISHI Homes has no published Gatongora listings yet (as of 26 Oct 2026). Live houses will appear on the Gatongora area page on homes.ishi.digital as agencies list them.
Because we have no verified numbers yet, compare asking rents across several listings and nearby areas before you agree to anything.
Who it suits and who it does not
Living in Gatongora may suit you if you:
- Work along Thika Road, in Ruiru, or in Nairobi and can handle a daily commute.
- Want a newer apartment rather than an older flat.
- Prefer a quieter area than central Nairobi.
It may not suit you if you:
- Need to reach the city centre quickly every day without traffic.
- Want everything - big malls, nightlife, many hospitals - right next to your door.
- Dislike dust and noise from ongoing building work.
Getting around
Thika Road is the main link to Nairobi and to towns further out. Matatus run along it, and boda bodas (motorbike taxis) cover the shorter trips from the main road into the estates.

What to check:
- Walk from the stage: How far is the house from the nearest matatu stop? Walk it yourself.
- Inner roads: Some estate roads may be rough, dusty or muddy in the rains. Visit after rain if you can.
- Peak hours: Try the trip to your workplace at the time you would really travel, morning and evening.
- Fares: Ask locals what they pay. Fares often rise at peak times and when it rains.
Water and power
Water is the biggest question in many fast-growing areas around Ruiru. Supply can vary from one building to the next.

Ask the landlord or caretaker:
- Is the house on piped county water, a borehole, or both?
- How many days a week does water flow?
- Is there a storage tank, and how big is it?
- Is water billed separately, and how is it measured?
For power, most apartments use Kenya Power prepaid tokens. Check that the unit has its own meter so you only pay for what you use. Ask neighbours how often the power goes off.
Safety
Safety differs from street to street, so speak to people who live there. Look for:

- A gate with a guard or caretaker, and working lighting in the compound.
- Lighting on the path from the main road to the building.
- Strong doors and window grills.
- How busy the route home feels after dark.
Ask the caretaker, neighbours and shop owners nearby. They usually give the most honest picture.
Shopping and daily life
You can expect small shops, kiosks, mama mbogas (vegetable sellers) and M-Pesa agents near most estates. For bigger supermarkets, banks and markets, many residents head to Ruiru town or other spots along Thika Road.
Check how far your nearest shop and market are, and whether you will need transport for a weekly shop.
Schools and health
There are private and public schools and clinics around Ruiru and Thika Road. Quality and fees vary a lot.
- Schools: Visit in person, ask about fees and transport, and talk to parents nearby.
- Health: Find the nearest clinic for small issues, and know where the closest hospital is for emergencies before you need it.
Internet
Newer apartments are often connected to fibre home internet. Before signing:
- Ask which providers already serve the building.
- Check mobile signal inside the house, not just outside.
- Ask neighbours if the connection is reliable.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Close to Thika Road | Traffic at peak hours |
| Many new apartments | Ongoing construction, dust and noise |
| Quieter than the city | Water supply can vary |
| Near Ruiru town for shopping | Some inner roads may be rough |
Nearby alternatives
If Gatongora does not fit, compare these nearby areas:
- Kenyatta Road: Also off Thika Road, with a mix of new apartments and plots. Worth comparing on water and access roads.
- Kihunguro: A busy estate area near Ruiru with many rental flats. Check how close you are to the main road.
- Ruiru: The main town nearby, with more shops, banks and services, but often busier.
Look at the same type of house in each area and compare rent, water, the walk from the stage and safety.
Before you pay anything
- Never pay before viewing. Do not send a deposit or booking fee for a house you have not seen.
- View the house in person. Check the water, meter, locks and the route from the main road yourself.
- Use verified listings. Find verified houses on ISHI Homes at homes.ishi.digital, and check the Gatongora area page for new listings as agencies add them.
